Study conditions

We may speak of two types of conditions that must be taken into account to confront studies more efficiently:

  • On one hand, environmental conditions.
  • On the other, psychophysical conditions.

Environmental conditions

With respect to environmental conditions, the main thing is:

  • To have a fixed place of study: careful with the process "a while at home and a while in the library", especially university students. The Faculty Library is only suitable for students with a high level of responsibility or for those who do not dispose of suitable environmental conditions at home.
  • To have suitable furniture: a clean, tidy table with all the essential materials at hand. A seat with a back on it which is soft (without being too soft) and on which your feet reach the ground. A nearby bookshelf so that you can reach the necessary material.
  • A suitable temperature (about 22º C).
  • Silence: in theory, there should be silence. Music makes it difficult to concentrate so when a lot of concentration is required, it should be avoided. If the work you are doing does not require a high level of concentration, it may be compatible, especially when it doesn't involve vocal compositions that induce you to follow the lyrics.
  • Lighting: Preferably natural. When this is not possible, artificial lighting illuminating the work area from the left (so that your hand doesn't cast a shadow when you write. For left-handed students, illumination from the right)

Psychophysical conditions

Feeling well, both physically and mentally, helps your studying enormously. Logically, this is often not in our hands, but there is always something we can do to improve it. Psychophysical conditions can improve with:

  • Physical activity.
  • Sufficient hours of sleep.
  • A appropriate diet (the Mediterranean diet with greater emphasis on breakfast, avoiding as far as possible foods that are not fresh)
  • Sufficient relaxation.

It is essential to insist on relaxation. We see more and more cases of people who, on the arrival of exams, present a high level of nervousness that may end up in hysteria. Any symptom of this kind must be treated from the beginning to prevent problems increasing.

There are several relaxation techniques that, if taken seriously, can help
